If you want to clean it up when it's a little smudgy, please do so with a very soft cloth. Like, really soft. Think Rachel Green's hair kinda soft.

If your piece is raw brass it will oxidise with air and moisture and it will darken over time, please do not worry - this is very normal and reversible if you wish!

All you need to do  give the pendant (not the chain) the occasional wipe with a dry cloth and a tiny bit of Brasso. This will leave a black residue on it, don't worry, this is normal, keep wiping this off and your piece will be so shiny your mammy would be proud.
